Tai Chi Demo Master Yang Sau Chung

Yang, Sau Chung (1910-1985), the eldest son of Grandmaster Yang Cheng Fu, began his Tai Chi Chuan training at the tender age of 8 under his father’s vigilant supervision. By the time he was 14, he had already started assisting his father in teaching the art. His role grew significantly, and by 19, he was accompanying his father on teaching tours across China. Notably, many who claim to have been taught by Yang Cheng Fu were, in reality, instructed by Yang Sau Chung due to his active involvement in these teaching sessions.

In 1949, amidst significant political changes in China, Yang Sau Chung relocated to Hong Kong. Here, he continued his teaching but chose to do so privately at his home, maintaining a low profile until his death in 1985. His commitment to preserving and proliferating the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan was profound, echoing the dedication of his forebears—his father, grandfather Yang Chien Hou, and great-grandfather Yang Lu Chan. Through his efforts, Yang Sau Chung attained one of the highest levels of mastery in his family’s style.

Yang Sau Chung’s legacy is significant; he transmitted the family’s deep-rooted traditions to his First Disciple, Ip Tai Tak, in 1958, and also to his three daughters, Amy – Tai Yee, Mary – Ma Lee, and Agnes – Yee-Li, ensuring the art would continue through both bloodline and devoted disciples. He also accepted two additional disciples, Chu Gin Soon in 1977 and Chu King Hung in 1983, both of whom would go on to contribute to the spread of Yang Family Tai Chi.

Master Ip Tai Tak, in particular, became a central figure in the continuation of the Yang family’s teachings. He was taught the comprehensive Yang Family System, now known as the Snake System, and served as Master Yang’s practice partner for the next 28 years. Ip Tai Tak further passed on the tradition by accepting his own disciples, John Ding and Bao Tak Fai (Robert Boyd), ensuring that the legacy of the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan would persevere through succeeding generations. Through these efforts, the teachings of Yang Sau Chung have left an indelible mark on the world of martial arts, embodying a lineage of both honor and skill.
